How can I grow my following on social media?

We all know having a presence on social media is important.

But without a solid content strategy, your social media presence will not achieve the results you desire.

There is a massive audience on social media just waiting for you to deliver interesting content to which people can relate (yes, they want to relate to it, not simply to be served with advertising).

The latest social media statistics reveal that 12 million Australians use Facebook on a daily basis! And 70% of all Australians actually have a Facebook account.

Meanwhile, don’t forget that Chinese social media tools like WeChat, RenRen and Weibo are also growing in Australia.

LinkedIn is now reporting it has 8 million registered users in Australia, with just over half of this number logging in each month.

So where do you start?  Here are the first five tips we recommend to get you started on growing your community on social media:

1. Set objectives and measure

There is no use being on social media if you don’t know what you’re trying to achieve.  Start small, test your market and work your way up.

2. Know your platforms

Depending on your business, you might not need to be on all social media platforms.  When starting out, for example, focusing on one or two might be enough. Work out what best suits your goals and where your audience is.

3. Shape your tone of voice to suit your audience

Knowing how to ‘talk’ to your audience will take you a long way.  Different platforms call for a different tone of voice, as will different audiences.

4.  Create amazing content

Your content is what will carry you over the line.  Find the most interesting way to get your message across and go for it.  You might also want to read our previous blog on why you should include video in your next content strategy.

5. Harness the power of influencers

Being retweeted 32.8 million times was an amazing response to Ellen's famous Oscars selfie back in 2014. But that was then and this is now. Celebrities are out and influencers are in. Do your research and find out which influencers are reaching your target audience. Then engage with them.
